Columbia Park Train to Make Seasonal Debut Open to Public

The J&S Dream Land Express in the Columbia Park in Kennewick Washington, will be making its seasonal debut tonight to give rides to members of the ARC of the Tri Cities. The J&S train, which has been taken over by the Horse Heaven Hills Kiwanis Club, will be run by several retired train engineers. Train rides will be available to the public tomorrow, May 1 until the end of September. Tomorrow the train rides will begin at 9:30am. Throughout the summer the train will run on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00p to 6:00p with the exception of the annual Family Fishing Pond event when the train will begin running at 9:30a. CBC to Hold Solar-Powered Concert and Tree Planting

Columbia Basin College in Pasco Washington will be holding a solar-powered concert and a tree planting on campus. The concert featuring Jonathan Kingham will be from 11:00am until 12:00pm in the HUB. The solar power for the concert is provided by the Franklin PUD. Following the concert, at 1:00pm there will be a tree planting east of the “W” building where those in attendance will receive seedlings to plant. This event is in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day. CBC has been named by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Campus USA school, the only community college in the state to receive the designation. Every year a Tri Cities resident is recognized for their service in the community at the annual Tri-Citian of the Year Banquet. Cleanup at 11 Hazardous Waste Burial Sites Finished 2 Years Ahead of Schedule

Back in 2002 Contractor Washington Closure Hanford began working on cleaning up 11 waste sites north of Richland, Washington. The Tri Party agreement Washington Closure was legally bound to states that the work had to be completed by 2012. Earlier this month Washington Closure announced they are finished with the cleanup work at the 11 sites, two years before the deadline. By finishing the cleanup this early, the contractor was able to save nearly $170 million. Throughout the cleanup workers have excavated 426,000 tons of soil at the 11 sites. One of the most hazardous sites, 618-7, workers dug up more than 800 barrels of hazardous materials, 100 drums of zircaloy…

Michael Honey, University of Washington humanities professor and author of the book Going Down Jericho Road: The Memphis Strike, King’s Last Campaign, will be speaking at Washington State University Tri Cities this Tuesday, May 27. Honey will be speaking at 7:00pm in the East Building Auditorium about Martin Luther King’s last campaign and unfinished agenda in the Era of Obama. This talk by Honey is a part of the Chancellor’s Lecture Series and is co-sponsored by Battelle. Honey’s lecture is free and open to the public, prior to the lecture there will be a meet-and-greet with Honey. The Society of Professional Journalists is accepting applications for the William O. Douglas Chapter’s Laurie J. Williams $500 scholarship. This scholarship benefits students from eastern Washington or eastern Oregon who are majoring in journalism. ESD 123 Putting on Bullying Workshop for Educators

Educational Services District 123 in Pasco is putting on a workshop for educators on May 4 from 8:30am to 3:30pm at the ESD 123 building, in the Blue Mountain Room. The workshop is on putting a stop to bullying and building a culture of acceptance in school. Those who attend will learn about what the law says about bullying and harassing as well as resources for support. Attendees will also learn about how to intervene when students are being bullied at school and the role of diversity.
