About Southgate Elementary School
Southgate Elementary School is in Benton County in the city of Kennewick, in a mid-sized city setting, and operated by the Kennewick School District education agency. It is classified as a primary school and home to approximately 570 students from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. The 23 teachers make up the student-teacher ratio of 24 students for every teacher.
Southgate Elementary School was founded in 1978 and has a total of 12 acres of land. It has a library media center, a gymnasium, a music room, and conference rooms. The concern of the school is not only aimed at academics but the total development of a child. Parents are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes every day with their children discussing their day at school and helping with their homework. The school believes that parents should work hand in hand with the teachers to be able to develop the child academically, physically, and socially. Part of the Kennewick School District curriculum includes Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Technology.
The Student’s Role
The Southgate Elementary School Student Responsibility Plan is created to offer an environment where students learn and teachers teach. The student’s role in this plan is to follow the teacher’s rules and to be respectful to others. The staff’s role is to be involved with the students, set expectations, and teach school and classroom rules. Aside from self-discipline, students are also taught responsibility, cooperation, and problem-solving skills. Positive behavior is encouraged and negative behavior is not tolerated.
The Southgate Elementary School issues report cards three times a year and conferences between the parents and teachers are held twice a year. This is to ensure that parents are aware of their child’s progress in school. Southgate Elementary School is constantly on top of the Kennewick School District’s academic achievement. Excellence is the school’s foremost goal. They want the students to leave the school ready to face the challenging world ahead of them.
