Kennewick School District’s objective is to help all children, with no exceptions, learn and succeed in school. Focus is on reading. The district’s goal is for children to be able to read at grade level upon reaching Third Grade, knowing that children who do not know how to read by this grade, have a hard time catching up, often dropping out of school with no future at all. Along with this, parents are encouraged to read to their children every day starting from infancy, which not only will form a stronger bond between parents and their children, but it will also help in preparing their children for a better future.
The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) exam in Reading, Writing and Mathematics for all Washington State Tenth Graders is a requirement to obtain a high school diploma starting in 2008. WASL scores will be included in the high school transcript starting in 2006. A student’s transcript is often a requirement for employment and entrance to public colleges and universities.
Another graduation requirement by the year 2007 is the Computer Competency Assessment. The CCA is a test to determine if the student has knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and the use of the Internet. This is to prepare students to meet new challenges in a globally competitive world.
The district has won the Grand Prize Magna Award in 1997 for Board Leadership and 1998 for its Accountability Program given by the American School Board Journal.
School Match, a national educational consulting and research firm, presented the Kennewick School District with “What Parents Want” Award in June 2006.
The district’s Board of Directors encourages parents to play an important role in their children’s education by attending school functions and parent-teacher conferences, by building a good parent-teacher relationship, and by helping their children in their school work and projects. Research shows that parent involvement results in improved school attendance, higher grades, self-confidence, and their children staying away from drugs and alcohol.
The Kennewick School District is proud to have dedicated educators and teachers that possess high credentials essential in guiding the students to reach their dreams. The city of Kennewick has been known to be in support of children to help them attain a brighter future.
