Home of the Braves
Kamiakin High School is located in northwestern Kennewick, Washington. When Washington Territory was founded in 1853, Kamiakin was the most famous Yakima chief. He was known to be a warrior and a buffalo hunter.
Kamiakin High School was established in 1970 and is a part of the Kennewick School District. It is classified as a High School, being in or near a mid-sized city, a part of the Kennewick School District and offers Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade. There are approximately 1,400 students and 64 teachers that make up the student-teacher ratio of 22 students per teacher. Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, Indians comprise the student population.
Student Body
Kamiakin High School students should know their responsibilities and their rights, and are expected to act in a manner that promotes a proper learning environment and one who has respect for authority, for others, as well as for themselves and the Kennewick School District.
Kamiakin High School is a closed campus. This means students cannot leave the school grounds once they have arrived or entered the campus grounds. They are only allowed to leave during lunch break. Students who want to leave campus have to pass through the attendance office and give the reason for wanting to leave once their school day has begun. This is being done for the protection of both the students and staff from outsiders.
Ranked High
Along with Hanford High School in Richland, Kamiakin High School is regarded to be the top public high school in all of southeastern Washington. The Washington Assessment of Student Learning and Iowa Standard Test scores of this school rank among the statewide leaders every year. The school's Distributive Education Clubs of America—the national high school marketing club program sends more students to the state competition than any other area schools.
Kamiakin High School student teams have been joining the Knowledge Bowl for the past decade and have placed several times at the Washington State level. Knowledge Bowl is a question and answer academic team contest.
In State Math Competitions, Kamiakin High School student teams are also often winners. The school has different clubs, too. The Kamiakin Drama Club where a group of students interested in theater meet. Topics about upcoming shows, fundraisers, and things happening in the community are being talked about. For those who are into computers, there is Kennewick School District's Computer/Technology Club. Interests may be computer gaming, computer repair, web design, networking, and other areas associated with computers.
Career Counseling
An important aspect in the growth and development of each Kamiakin student is career counseling. The goal of this program is to develop students' awareness about themselves and help students in planning for the future.
Kamiakin High School competes in the Columbia Basin League. It is categorized as a 3A school. Pasco High School is Kamiakin’s most intense rival in football in Washington State. The school’s football varsity is top five in the state according to the Associated Press. The Kamiakin High School Drum line is one of the top percussion ensembles in Washington State.
Kamiakin High School prepares the students for a lifetime of learning and skill development and through their daily attendance, effort and commitment, success will be achieved.
