Mid Columbia Musical Theatre Presents Les MisérablesFirst published in 1862, Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo. It is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century, and it is coming on stage at the Richland High School Auditorium on March 14, 15, 21, 22, and 23.

One of the 19th Century’s Bests
The novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters over a period of 17 years, beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion. The novel’s focus is on the struggles of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict, and his experience of redemption. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love.

The impact of Les Misérables is so strong that it has been popularized through numerous stage adaptations, and several films, the most recent of which was shown just this 2012 and starred Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.
