March for Dimes' Annual March for Babies

The March of Dimes will be having their annual March for Babies, May 7 at Columbia Park in Kennewick. The march is a 6.5 mile walk through Columbia Park along the river. Throughout the 6.5 miles there will be six checkpoints along the way and a hot dog lunch at the end. Things start going at 8:00am when the refreshments and registration begins. At 8:45am there will be warm-ups and announcements with the walk beginning at 9:00am. The purpose of the March of Dimes’ March for Babies is to raise money for research and programs. Under the direction of Todd Westendorf the Chiawana High School Stage Company will be giving several performances of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; the costumes were put together by Verna Schwilke. Performances will take place this weekend and next on Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm, April 15,16, 22 and 23. Tickets cost $10 for students and $12 for adults, they can be purchased at the Chiawana High School ASB Office Monday-Friday between 7:00am-2:00pm, Mills Music in Kennewick Washington or at the door.

The Carson Kolzig Foundation will be having their second annual Responding to Autism Event this Friday, April 15 at the Three Rivers Convention Center from 10:00am to 4:00pm. On Monday, February 28 at 7:00pm Mid Columbia Library will be hosting the Community Science and Technology Seminar series. This next seminar will be given by Dr. Glen Fryxell on nanomaterials. Dr. Fryxell will be discussing what nanomaterials are and in what ways they can be beneficial or harmful. Dr. Fryxell has been working with nanostructure materials for the last 22 years at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. While working with these materials Fryxell also has spent time looking into its uses for environmental applications like sequestration of toxic heacy metals from industrial streams and groundwater. In 2009 Dr. Fryxell was named a Battelle Distinguished Inventor, he is named as inventor of 16 US Patents. There is no cost to attend this event.

This weekend get ready from some action packed basketball! The Harlem Globetrotters are coming town this Sunday, February 20, for their 85th season. This is going to be a game like no other they have played before, you don’t want to miss it! The game will begin at 4:00pm at the Toyota Center in Kennewick Washington. This Thursday, January 20 at 7:00pm, Professor David Bullock will present “A Strike to the Heart: Historical Memory and Roslyn’s Western Miners Union” at the Kennewick Washington branch of the Mid Columbia Library.

Professor David Bullock will tell the story of the early miners in Central Washington who dedicated their time to creating a new and independent union. The miners hard work had a huge impact on coal operators, the United Mine Workers, racial and ethnic tensions, communist influences, neighborhood infighting, and finances.
