How Will You Pay for College Workshop at Kamiakin High School

On Thursday April 22, at 7:00p, in the library at Kamiakin High School there will be a workshop for parents and students about college funding. The workshop is meant to parents and students about getting money through scholarships and grants, about new student loans, and how to apply for financial aid to get the best deals. Erik Pielstick, certified college planning specialist, will be heading up the workshop. There is no charge to attend but pre-registration is required in order to receive the 48-page college funding guide. For more information call Kamiakin High School at 509.372.7606. Tri Cities Washington Home Building Permits Up

Homebuilding in Tri Cities Washington has gone up a substantial amount in the first quarter compared to the same time last year.New Construction Homeowners Looking Over Plans In the first quarter this year there have been 500 permits issued for single family homes where as, in the first quarter last year there were only 169. This year the total value of permits issued is about $112 million which is the best it’s been since 2005 when there were 528 issues. During the fourth quarter last year fall there were 295 permits issued with a combined total of $68 million. CBC and Columbia Chorale Co-Sponsoring Fred Dixon Benefit Show

The Columbia Chorale and the CBC Theatre Department are working together to co-sponsor a benefit show on May 1, in memory of Broadway’s biggest fan, and local actor, Fred Dixon. The event will begin at 7:00p at Faith Assembly in Pasco Washington. The night will be full of Broadway tunes and scenes, to get in there is a $10 donation which will go towards the Fred Dixon Theatre Scholarship. Hanford Hoping to Reduce Active Footprint by 2015

Last year, the Richland Washington Hanford facility began an ambitious vision to reduce the active footprint of cleanup at the site by 2015.Hanford Site 1945 To protect the Columbia River and reduce the overall life-cycle cost. This vision could not be possible without $1.6 billion in stimulus money thanks to the Recovery Act. There are many projects beginning out at Hanford so that they are able to meet the 2015 deadline.

At the beginning of the year the construction of two new cells, 9 and 10, began. These two cells will be the size of 35 football fields; they will go down into the ground about 70 feet. By having more disposal capacity Hanford will be able to dispose of more waste.

Tri City Employment on the Up Swing

The Tri Cities employment rates are still looking up. Last month employment was at 96,800 nonfarm jobs, up 3.9% from last year at the same time when there were 93,200 nonfarm jobs. Employment numbers were also up between months with a 1,400 increase in nonfarm jobs between February and March. Employment growth over the past year occurred in fields like, manufacturing, professional and business services, retail trade and the government sector. The growth between February and March occurred in trade, transportation, warehousing and utilities sector, retail trade industry, administrative and support services, and the leisure and hospitality industry. Children in a Fun Run

The YMCA of the Greater Tri-Cities will be hosting a healthy kid’s fun run on May 22 at Leslie Groves Park in Richland. The event will include a 50-yard dash for kids 6 and under, a 1K and a 5K for all ages. The 50-yard dash will begin at 8:30a, the 1K will begin at 8:45a, and the 5K will begin at 9:00a. following the runs there will be bounce houses, a fruit smoothie station, watermelon eating contests, and games.
