The Tri City Herald conceptualized the Tri Citian of the Year award. The very first recipient of this award was Owen Hurd, and that was back in 1962.

Despite hitches along the way, the Tri Citian of Year awarding is now a community wide effort and is considered the single most important and well-known annual awards program in the Tri Cities.
