According to the Benton County crime statistics, the amount of crimes in 2009 are very close to the number of crimes reported in 2008; these are the part 1 crimes. The Part 1 crimes are homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, auto theft, and arson. Part 1 crimes do not include domestic violence reports, identity theft issues, or traffic violations. Part 1 crimes are only a fraction of what Law enforcement agencies deal with, last year West Richland responded to 5,042 call with only 189 being part 1 crimes. For the first time in 25 years the law enforcement agencies of Benton County did not investigate any homicides, not including vehicular homicides. In Richland the Police Officers are focusion on traffic violators in order to reduce the number of traffic collisions they deal with. The Tri Cities is a safe community to live in even though there is an increasing population and decreasing law enforcement. The local law enforcement is doing well with what they have but they are looking to seek out grants in order to improve their battle against crime.
