Finley Middle School
Students make many changes during their years of schooling. These changes are major events in the lives of both the students and the parents as well. The stress created by these changes can be minimized when the new environment responds to each particular age group. Along with the transition into middle level schools, intellectual, moral, social, emotional, and physical changes take place in at least part of the transition at any given time. Students entering middle level schools need to be assisted before, during, and after the move to a higher level of education so that they can adjust socially, psychologically, and academically. Finley Middle School provides this for its students. The middle school excells at inspiring and guiding kids through their tough academic journey.
Students in this phase are experiencing life at a new level. Finley Middle School is an encouraging, caring and communicative environment that intensifies the joy of learning, while supporting the students’ journey into adulthood. Excellence in education and responsible citizenship are the goals of the staff.
Finley Middle School is a middle school with approximately 280 students and 13 teachers. Located in the city of Finley, Finley Middle School has made the commitment to provide team teaching. Team teaching is when a team of teachers with the same group of students and a common planning time can plan integrated instruction by correlating skills and concepts between subjects. It is believed that at this early adolescent stage consistency and guidelines are important. Through team work, teachers work together sharing their individual strengths and interests toward common goals and objectives to assure success for the students.
The learning goals of Finley Middle School focus on Discipline-The Choice Card System and instruction based on the Essential Academic Learning Requirements wherein the goals are for the students to:
- Read with comprehension, write with skill, and communicate effectively and responsibly in a variety of ways and settings.
- Know and apply the core concepts and principles of Mathematics, Social, Physical, and Life Sciences, Civics and History, Geography, Arts, and Health and Fitness.
- Think analytically, logically, and creatively, and bring together experience and knowledge to form reasoned judgments in order to solve problems.
- Understand the importance of work and how performance, effort and decisions directly affect career and educational opportunities.
Technology also plays a big role in the students’ daily activities at Finley Middle School. As technology changes, so do the educational needs of children. A technology-rich school produces impressive results for students, including improved achievement and student attitude; higher test scores; devotion and engagement; richer classroom content; and improved student memory and future job placement rates.
Opportunities are given to the students to achieve and excel through activities like athletics, leadership classes, peer mediation, Natural Helpers, Chess clubs, dance clubs, and outdoor adventures. Finley Middle School is committed to helping the students become motivated, lifelong learners and responsible adults and with the combined efforts of the parents, staff, students and the community, the vision of All Kids Achieving will not be far from becoming a reality.
