Hanford High School is in the city of Richland, in the state of Washington. Richland’s superior climate makes it conducive to outdoor activities. Parks in front of the Columbia River and Yakima River make it a favorite place for boating, fishing, water skiing, and other water activities. Hanford High School is categorized as a High School, run by the Richland School District education agency, offering Ninth to Twelfth Grade. The population of an approximate of 1300 is composed of mixed races of Caucasian, Asian, Hispanic, African American, and Indian. With a total of 94 teachers, a ratio of 14 students for every teacher is made.
Hanford High School was established in 1972 with an elementary and middle school. Due to budget problems in the school district, the elementary school was closed in the middle part of the 80’s. The middle school closed in 2005 when another middle school in West Richland opened. It has recently undergone renovation and expansion.

Hanford High School's commitment is to provide the best education in a safe, caring environment. Among the 3A size schools in southeastern Washington State, Hanford High School is said to be the number one. The Washington Assessment of Student Learning and Iowa Standard Test results yearly place them among the leaders in the state. The Knowledge Bowl, with weekly practices, is a set of review questions from the different subject areas. The Hanford High School teams won the second, fifth, and fifteenth place from the 24 competing teams.
Hanford High School has a number of clubs and teams like the Distributive Education Clubs of America, one of the first student leadership organizations in the country; the National Honor Society, the first organization to acknowledge outstanding students in high school; Science Bowl, wherein the team of Hanford High School won and competed in the National competition for 9 years; the Advanced Art Club, Future Leaders French Club, Dance Team, choirs, bands, to name a few.
Hanford & Honors
Past and present honors and awards received by Hanford High School include 2003 Golden Apple Awards winner for the school’s drama club, West Coast Cheer competition grand champion for the varsity cheer squad, and Washington State’s Destination Imagination competition winner. In 2004, senior high student was named Superintendent’s Choice Award at the state’s High School Art Show, Vocal Jazz Rhythm Combo won at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and another student won at the state’s Student Technology competition. In 2005, the Dance Team won two championships at the state’s High School Dance competition, a team of students won in the state’s Technology Students Association competition and in the state’s Destination Imagination competition, and High School Art Show. And for this year, the Varsity Cheer Squad won third place at the American School Spirit Awards competition, the Dance Team again won two championships at the state’s Dance competition, the boys Swimming Team were champions at the WIAA, and the teams competed in the Destination Imagination World Finals. At the Washington State Drama Festival, double superior rating was given to the musical production “Guys and Dolls” Both academics and extra curricular activities are given attention in the belief that both will help students of Hanford High School to become achievers.
