In 1872 the first plat was recorded in the region now known as Goldendale Washington, seven years later the city was incorporated. Before Goldendale became a city the area was a watering stop on the Yakima-Okanogan wagon trail. Goldendale is now the largest city in Klickitat County as well as the county seat.
Goldendale is located in what is considered to be the rain shadow, caused by the Cascade Mountains 40 miles to the west. Annually the city gets between 8 and 12 inches of rain a year with intermittent thunderstorms late in the summer. Most of the summer is full of sun with temperatures reaching up to 100°F, while winters, which contain most of the precipitation, can get as low as 0°F. Goldendale’s summer weather is great for golfing at the Goldendale Country Club Golf Course or heading out to the Goldendale Observatory State Park.
