Mid-Columbia Literary Festival: Meet Author S.A. Bodeen A perfect way to cap off a laidback Saturday evening is a meet-and-greet opportunity with renowned author S.A. Bodeen.

Miss Bodeen is the award-winning author of The Compound, a young adult thriller that has received positive reception from readers, as well as a slew of other books. Incidentally, Miss Bodeen also won the much-coveted Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award in 1999 from the New York Public Library and was named a Charlotte Zolotow Award Highly Commended Title.

During the annual Mid-Columbia Literary Festival, Miss Bodeen’s book, The Compound, was selected as the Community Reads book. Hundreds of free copies of the book were distributed in the Tri Cities region.

Second Annual Financial Fitness Day at CBC in Pasco, WAThe first quarter of the new year is nearing its end. What have you done as far as your financial goals are concerned? The Columbia Basin College Theatre Department is proud to present The Last Five Years, a musical by Jason Robert Brown. Under the direction of Ginny Quinley, The Last Five years stars Heather Manley and Greg Rose; music was directed by Justin Raffa. The show will take place May 12, 13, and 14 at 7:30pm and May 15 at 2:00pm. All show will take place at the CBC Theatre in Pasco Washington. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for students.

This Thursday, January 20 at 7:00pm, Professor David Bullock will present “A Strike to the Heart: Historical Memory and Roslyn’s Western Miners Union” at the Kennewick Washington branch of the Mid Columbia Library.

Professor David Bullock will tell the story of the early miners in Central Washington who dedicated their time to creating a new and independent union. The miners hard work had a huge impact on coal operators, the United Mine Workers, racial and ethnic tensions, communist influences, neighborhood infighting, and finances.

The Art Department at Columbia Basin College is proudly hosting the exhibit, Encased in Wax. Encased in Wax features 37 small scale encaustic paintings by Susan Najarian and Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch, Western Washington artists. Each of the 37 pieces of art was created using an ancient form of painting called encaustic, this means that layers of pigment are covered in wax and combined to support the heat. Each painting is a representation of the outside world whether it is a depiction of people, plants, or animals.

This weekend and next weekend Columbia Basin College’s theatre department will be performing a rendition of George Orwell’s 1984. Performances will take place in the CBC theatre in Pasco Washington on November 13-14 and 19-20. Each play will begin promptly at 7:30pm. The cost of tickets is $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at the door before the show.

The Columbia Basin College Arts and Humanities Department is pleased to present as part of their Summer Showcase, a wonderful musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. This musical comedy will be performed by theatre students and faculty at the CBC Theatre in Pasco Washington. Showings will be on August 13, 14, 17, 19, 20, 21 at 7:30pm and August 15 and 22 at 2:00pm. Tickets cost $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors; these can be purchased at Shelby’s Floral in Kennewick, Adventure Underground Bookstore in Richland, The CBC Performing Arts Office on the Pasco Campus, and at the door. Columbia Basin College LogoThe Art Department at Columbia Basin College, in Pasco Washington, will be putting on their Annual Juried Student Exhibition. The exhibition will begin on May 17 in the Esvelt Gallery at CBC, there will be an opening reception and awards ceremony on May 20 beginning at 7:00pm. A collection of student work will be displayed that reflects the finest efforts of CBC art students, past and present. The exhibit is open to the public, the gallery hours are Monday – Thursday from 8:00am to 8:30pm, and Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm; admission is free.
