The play, Happy Birthday, Wanda June, is written by Kurt Vonnegut. A film adaptation of the play was released in 1971, directed by Mark Robson.
Happy Birthday, Wanda June's story centers on Harold Ryan. Harold comes from a war and returns to their home on the day of his birthday after a long time. Everybody thinks he is no longer alive. His son does not recognize him anymore and strangely, there is a cake with Happy Birthday, Wanda June greeting which amazes Harold. He is puzzled about the identity of Wanda June and why it seems there is a celebration at his own home for a person he does not know.
