The Promise of Abundant Leisure Activities in Richland

Almost any day of the year, there is something new and exciting to do in the small city of Richland Washington. From the “Ohh!” of kayaking to the “Om” of yoga, Richland offers it all.

Sports
Golf is one of the favorite sports in the area. Because of the exceptional weather Richland experiences, golfers have year-round access to the five courses. There’s one 9-hole public course, three 18-hole public courses, and one semi-private 18-hole course. Another ten or so courses within a 20-minute drive out of town means you won’t have to play the same course twice in any month.

Richland LeisureWater sports like boating, fishing, water skiing, and duck hunting are popular as well. With a yachting club, fishing contests, and several boating groups, many Richland residents belong to outdoor clubs. With the Columbia and Yakima Rivers both close by, water lovers won’t be left high and dry. If frozen water, in the form of snow, is more to your liking, snowshoeing, and skiing are less than 2 hours away.

Hikers will relish the many meandering trails that weave through Richland and into the surrounding areas. One local favorite is located on Badger Mountain. The two-kilometer trail provides a beautiful view of the Badger Mountain Centennial Preserve.

If you prefer indoor sports, the local recreation center offers a plethora of classes in sports, exercise, wellness, dance, and arts and crafts. Fitness classes include Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, step aerobics, strength training, and table tennis. There is also a fitness room full of stationary bikes, weight machines, and treadmills.

Recreation and Leisure
The recreation department offers periodic classes for fun, pampering, and –personal education as well. Some classes offered in the past have been relaxing aromatherapy, skin care, introduction to meditation, posture, and balance, and holiday makeover lessons.

Richland celebrates folk dancing during its annual Folk Dancing Festival where the locals show off all they’ve learned during the previous year. Popular dance classes include Salsa, line dancing, belly dancing, and square dancing. They are offered year-round at the recreation center.

Special events include an annual haunted pool house, a spring carnival, and a summertime cinema under the stars. Unique art classes are presented at all major holidays in addition to ongoing classes like bookbinding, watercolor, and mixed media.

Do you like to root for the home team? Professional sports teams in the area include the Tri-City Americans WHL ice hockey team that plays in nearby Kennewick, the Tri-Cities Fever National Indoor Football League team that also plays in Kennewick, and the Tri-City Dust Devils Single-A baseball team that plays in nearby Pasco. There is also a very talented group of little athletes in the form of the Richland Little League team. In 2003, the Richland Little League team made it all the way to the Little League World Series.

There’s more to do in Richland Washington than in many big cities without the rush hour traffic or sickly smog. Golf, fishing, dancing, arts, and crafts, and relaxing boat rides – it’s a good thing you don’t have to choose just one.
