The fourth annual polar bear plunge put on by the Kennewick Police Department is planned for January 30, 2010. Last year 186 brave souls jumped into the Columbia River, this year they are expecting around 250 people to take the jump. The purpose for the jump is to raise awareness and money for the Special Olympics Athletics around the state. Plungers are supposed to gain pledges from people to jump, they must have a minimum of $50 pledged to jump in. For those too chicken to take the plunge but would like to give support there is a “Chicken Coop” to watch from. The first year this event was held they raised $20,000 and last year they raised $37,000, this year they are hoping to raise close to $50,000. For more information call 1.800.752.7559 or visit the Special Olympics Washington website.
