Harvest Festival

The Country Mercantile is holding their annual Harvest festival, going on right now. With the cost of admission you will get a ride out to the pumpkin patch, work your way through the corn maze, straw-bale maze and pyramids. Chancellor’s Art Exhibition Series
Washington State University Tri Cities recently opened up their Chancellor’s Art Exhibit. The exhibit features nearly 40 works of art by 18 regional artists. The exhibit is free and open to the public through December 16 in the East Building. For more information visit the WSU Tri Cities website.

Watch the Wine Grow
Terra Blanca Winery in Benton City Washington is offering tours this Friday and Saturday, October 14 & 15. A staff member will guide you as you learn about the winery and Red Mountain. Tours will take place on Friday at 3:00pm and Thursday at 12:00pm and 3:00pm. Reservations are required. Visit the Terra Blanca Winery website to make reservations or learn more about the tour.

Portland Spirit Dinner Cruise

It’s that time of year again, time to head out to the Country Mercantile for their annual Harvest Festival. The festival features rides, a pumpkin patch, petting zoo, mazes, and a variety of fun for the whole family.

Admission is $6.50 per person; children under the age of 2 are free. Admission covers a ride out to the pumpkin patch, the corn maze, straw-bale maze and pyramids as well as the petting zoo; admission does not include rides. Pumpkins are sold separately. The cost for pumpkins are as follows: Orange Pumpkins – $0.24/lb; Red and White Pumpkins – $0.59/lb; corn stalks – $5.95 each; and bales of straw – $5.95 each.

The Harvest Festival will feature a rolercoaster, train, carousel, and airplane ride. There will also be a bounce obstacle course, cotton candy and popcorn. Each ride or venue costs tickets, which can be purchased as singles or in bulk. Single tickets are $1, 10 tickets can be purchased for $8.50, 20 tickets can be purchased for $15 and unlimited rides can be purchased for $13.

The Harvest Festival will be open every day of the week until the end of October. The hours of operation are 9:00am-6:00pm daily.

Forbes has recently come to a conclusion that residents of Tri Cities Washington have known for many years, the Tri Cities is a geeky place. Out of all the areas throughout the nation the Tri Cities ranks 11 as the geekiest place to live. This ranking is mostly attributed to the fact that 11% of the population works in a field having to do with science, technology, engineering, or mathematics, right behind Seattle with 11.8%.

Those who live in the Tri Cities Washington know its more than that when they look around; science is a huge part of the Tri Cities. Residents live on streets such at Einstein Avenue, Curie Street, Proton Lane, and Mercury Drive. Many residents have some fun at Atomic Bowl or get a bite to eat at Atomic Ale and Brewery, and they dress their babies in clothing with radioactive symbols on the front.

During the years of 2004-2009 the Benton County averaged 37 patents for every 100,000 people, outpacing other metropolitan counties. 301 of the 357 patents earned during those years were granted to Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. Science is not just in the Tri Cities it is a part of the Tri Cities.

During the past 14 years the Three Rivers Folklife Society has put on the annual Tumbleweed Music Festival and this year is no exception. On the weekend of September 3-4, 2011 bring the whole family out and enjoy some wonderful music, scrumptious food, and a walk through the park looking at what the different vendors have to display in Richland Washington’s Howard Amon Park. If you are interested there will also be workshops to attend, here is a list of the workshps offered. Every year we love to take a stroll through the park listening to the various musical groups and letting the kids play. We can’t go to the festival without getting a few Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches from one of the food vendors for the family to share, they are delicious.

There are five stages set up at the music festival and there is always a band playing on each one; there is a map online of the stage setup. A full schedule can be found online of what bands are playing when and on what stage. On Saturday evening there will be a main concert at the North Stage. The charge to attend the Saturday evening concert is $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. There is also a free concert on Sunday at 6:30pm at the South Stage.

Each day the festival begins at 11:00am and goes until 7:00pm. Admission is free, there is an option though to pay $50 to become a Tumbleweed Patron. A Tumbleweed Patron receives two tickets to the Saturday evening concert, two participant buttons for admittance into the Hospitality area where there is complimentary snacks and beverages and the the opportunity to socialize with the Tumbleweed performers.

This Saturday, August 13, 2011 the city of Prosser Washington will be hosting the 30th Annual Prosser Wine and Food Festival. The festival draws close to 2500 wine lovers from all over the region for an afternoon of fine wine and food. Stroll around tasting wine from 30 Washington wineries, enjoying food put together by local vendors, and trying beer from a couple local breweries as you enjoy the sounds of the local bands that will be performing.

The event will take place at the Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center in Prosser Washington. Things will kick off at 2:00pm and last until 8:00pm. Tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
Neither minors (under 21) nor pets will be permitted at the event.

This year the 2011 Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo is “More than an 8 Second Ride,” come check out all the fair has to offer. Every year the year is a ton of fun for all ages. To start things off there is a Demolition Derby the night before the fair begins at 6:30pm with trials and 7:30pm is the racing; gates open at 4:00. There will be kiddie rides for the little ones and larger adrenaline pumping, carnival rides for the older ones. One could spend the whole day wandering through the exhibits, meeting new people, trying new food, and admiring the craftsmanship on display. There are also a wide variety of animals for show including sheep, cows, pigs, ducks, bunnies, and more. Of course there is also the Rodeo at 7:00pm Wednesday through Saturday, where there are events such as calf roping, bareback riding, carrel racing as well as other events and entertainment. As If that wasn’t enough to keep you busy at the fair, every night at 7:30pm there is a concert this year the concert lineup is Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on August 23, Bret Michaels on August 24, Kenny Rogers on August 25, Blue Oyster Cult on August 26, and Lee Brice on August 27. The fair this year will take place August 23rd-27th, 2011. General admission into the fair costs $10 for adults (13 & Up) and $5 for ages 6-12 and seniors. If you are planning to ride the bus to the fair then you can purchase fair/bus combo ticket, adults cost $11.50 and the youth/senior fair/bus combo ticket costs $6.50. There are also tickets for purchase for reserved seats at various events at the fair. Reserved tickets for concerts cost $10. Tickets for reserved seats at the Demolition Derby cost $15. Individual tickets can be purchases for the carnival rides or you can buy a carnival wristband for $23. Tickets for reserved seats at the Rodeo are $10 each or there are general admission tickets which are free. On Wednesday kids get in for only $2 as part of the Kid’s Day. Tickets can be purchased online at the Benton Franklin Fair and Rodeo General Store or at Ranch & Home.

Hydroplane Race Kick-Off Party
On July 29, 2011 come on out to Clover Island Inn for an evening of fun and gear up for the 46th Annual Columbia Cup Hydroplane Races, Colorblind will be playing. Things will kick off at 7:00pm and go until about 11:00pm. The cost is $5 per person, only those over the age of 21 will be admitted.

Pool Party
Every Sunday during the months of July and August head over to Clover Island Inn for music by 3 Legged Dog, food and beverages at the pool.

Thunder on the Island
Every Wednesday over the months of June through August 17th check out some hot rods, motorcycles and live music at Clover Island Inn. The cost of admission is free, food and drinks are available for purchase. This is a family friendly event.

Corvettes on the River Show
On August 6, 2011 Clover Island Inn will be hosting Corvettes on the River in conjunction with the release party for Joe Walla’s new CD. Things will get rolling at 7:00pm and last until about 11:00pm. The cost is $20 per person, only those over the age of 21 will be admitted.

Quarter Flash Concert “Harden my Heart”
On August 13, 2011 come out to Clover Island for a Quarter Flash concert, opened by Colorblind opening.

Wendy lee of Fort Logan Designs will teach you how to make tear drops on silver wire using a live torch. Through the course of the class you will learn hos to measure, bundle and wire wrap a custom pendant. The cost to attend is $110.00 which include the cost of materials. Both sessions will take place from 10:00am-1:00pm.

September 22, 2011: Vintage Paper Collage Yoga Style

Michelle Allgaier will bring her love of yoga to the class as she directs you to create a one of a kind collage based on your favorite yoga pose. There will be a variety of paper to aide you in creating your collage including vintage sheet music, old books and dictionaries, modern metallic paper, tissue paper and other papers. The class will be from 7:00-9:00pm. The cost if $50; there must me a minimum of 3 people to hold the class and a maximum of 12.

This summer sign your 5+ year old child into some art classes, this is great for any student, artistic or not. Throughout the summer Chell Design in Kennewick Washington will be holding art classes for children. These classes are held to teach children not only how to create art but also to teach them the history and technique behind piece of art. Children who attend will participate in lessons centered on a “reason;” reasons may include a reading assignment, a holiday theme, mimicking apiece of art or even following step by step instructions. Classes will also incorporate art history and a chance for your child to creatively explore a theme. Classes are open to 5-10 year old child(ren) on Wednesday’s from 10:00-11:30 or 11 and up children on Wednesday’s from 12:00-1:30. Check out the following schedule of classes.

July 20, 2011: Draw and Paint Flora and Fauna
Students will learn about the art of observation through a discussion of drawing what you see and seeing the details that make up the plant or animal being observed. Students will pick from several animal choices and draw their animal in their habitat using watercolor pencil and paint. The cost of the class is $20 per person, there is a 3 student minimum and a 12 student maximum.

July 27, 2011: Mini Canvas Art
Students will learn about several different art styles such as abstract, impressionistic, realism and other styles. Students in attendance will pick their own subject and use acrylic paints to create their piece of art. The cost of the class is $20 per person, there is a 3 student minimum and a 12 student maximum.

August 3, 2011: Mixed Media Collage – Tissue Collage
Students will enjoy cutting and pasting tissue paper, or maybe other things, to creat their own collage and let the creative process take over. The cost of the class is $20 per person, there is a 3 student minimum and a 12 student maximum.

August 10, 2011: Mixed Media – Using Texture Gel Mediums
Gel Mediums are not something children know much about, during this class they will be able to explore all the fun and art to have with things like pumice gel, string gel, and glass bead gel and get the chance to create their own layered collage. The cost of the class is $25 per person, there is a 3 student minimum and a 12 student maximum.
