Hawthorne Elementary School
Hawthorne Elementary School is operated by the Kennewick School District education agency. It is listed as a regular school, located in a mid-sized city setting, in Benton County and the city of Kennewick. Columbia Park in Kennewick, has a riverfront land of more than 300 acres offering numerous recreational activities and opportunities.

The school’s curriculum includes learning philosophies by using Direct Instruction – a powerful, highly efficient teaching method designed to promote thorough understanding and rapid progress in a controlled sequence; Bilingual programs in Spanish – the goals of which is to ensure that each student acquire the skills and knowledge to succeed in a global society by working toward bilingualism, biliteracy and cross-cultural abilities; and special education programs designed especially for students with specific learning disabilities.
Hawthorne's Quality Staff
An enormous amount of the staff effort is focused on reading. Hawthorne Elementary School has been honored with reading awards from the Kennewick School District, and the State of Washington, as well.
For two years now, the school has implemented the Harcourt Math program – a research-based math program for students to better understand the foundational concepts of math.
Writing is also one skill the school is focusing on believing that it is an important step towards helping the students become successful writers.
Hawthorne WASL
In the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), the scores have remained high in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, and Writing but the staff still continues to make improvements to increase effectiveness.
Believing that the parents and the community are a big part of a student’s achievement, the school encourages them to give their support and to be involved.
The school also applies the Love and Logic Philosophy wherein children are given tasks and responsibilities and allowed to make their own choices. This program will help develop self-confidence, and will produce capable and creative adults.
In the field of computer technology, Internet is available in every classroom and the Library has a computer laboratory available to teachers for keyboard lessons, computer-assisted learning, projects that needs Internet research.
