Benton City is a small town that could be classified as a bedroom community of the larger cities of Richland and Kennewick. This allows you to live in a small community, yet still be near all of the amenities of the big cities. The gateway to this town is a bridge over the Yakima River.
Benton City rests in the curve of the Yakima River making it a very fertile and lush area. There are orchards of apple, cherry, pear, apricot, and walnut. Nearby Red Mountain is the newest world-renowned and high quality wine appellation and viticulture area.

Geographical Information
Benton City covers 1.8 square miles and of those 1.7 square miles is land and 0.57% is water (the Yakima River). There is average of 300 days of sunshine a year.
To the south is the Horse Heaven Hills which is has numerous orchards and to the north is Rattlesnake Mountain. It is the highest North American treeless mountain and is home to large herds of elk and deer.
Benton city is located just off of Interstate 82 offering easy access to the larger nearby cities of Richland and Kennewick.

Population Demographics (2000 Census)
As of the 2000 census, Benton City had a population of 2,624, 894 households, and 660 families residing in the city.
Of this population 84.34% are White, 0.15% African American, 1.14% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 10.63% from other races, and 3.09% from two or more races. Ancestries are:  16.3% German, 14.0% Irish, 11.9% English, 9.5% United States, 4.4% Swedish, and 3.7% Norwegian.
The average age of the citizens of Benton City is 30.2, with a median income of $33,636 (2000).  The median price for a home in 2000 was $85,300

Benton City Schools
The school system in Benton city is combined with the nearby small community of Kiona and is know as the Kiona-Benton School District. There are the Kiona-Benton Elementary, Kiona-Benton Middle, Kiona-Benton Intermediate, and Kiona-Benton City High.
The schools have full sports, performing arts, and FFA activities. The teachers and staff are very supportive of the students and work closely with the parents.
Colleges close to Benton City are Columbia Basin Community College (28 miles), WSU-Tri Cities campus (18 miles), Yakima Valley Community College (80 miles), Central Washington University (88 miles).
