Richland, one of the Tri-Cities of Washington, is located in the County of Benton, with an approximate population of 44,000. Situated on the mighty Columbia River, its’ waterfront offers a seacoast, docks, and a trail five miles long for walking, biking, jogging, or even just for strolling. Different water activities like water skiing and fishing may be enjoyed here. Other attractions include parks like the Howard Amon Park and the Leslie Groves Park which is located along the Columbia River on more than 149 acres of land. For arts and entertainment, it has the Roundabout Theater Arts, Three Rivers Arts & Entertainment District, and Tri-Art Gallery, to name a few.

There are also museums like the Hanford Reach National Monument Heritage & Visitor Center and the Columbia River Exhibition of History, Science & Technology which shows the progress of the Columbia Basin from the past, present and its’ future. Public schools situated in the city are under the Richland School District. Having eight elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools, this school district has approximately 10,000 students and 1,100 employees.

Honors and Awards
Numerous awards and honors have been received by the Richland School District. In 2003, two schools were the academic state champions, Richland High School for the girls soccer team and Hanford High School for the girls swim team. The International Reading Association gave the “Exemplary Reading Program Award” to Tapteal Elementary School and one of its teachers was awarded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, “Citizenship Education Teacher for 2003”. The “Golden Apple Awards” was given to Hanford High School and Hanford Middle School Drama Program for showing programs that make a positive difference in the field of education in Washington State. In 2004, the district received the Washington State Quality Award for its excellent performance. It was the first school district in Washington State to be a recipient of such an award. A senior from the Richland High School won the top place in the state’s Voice of Democracy Patriotic Essay Contest. State championships were won by the Hanford High School for girls soccer team and boys golf team. In 2005, the Washington Art Education Association named a Richland High School teacher “Secondary Level Art Teacher”. Another teacher from the Jason Lee Elementary School was awarded by the National Association of Geo science Teacher the “Pacific Northwest Outstanding Earth Science Teacher”. In 2006, the gold medal was given by the Academic Performance by Expansion Management magazine to the district. A science teacher from Richland High School was chosen as one of the awardees in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in the field of Mathematics and Science.

Students are provided an excellent academic program especially in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. The Richland School District works hard to make sure students master the foundational skills of reading, writing and math. The Richland School District builds upon that foundation by offering a rigorous academic program which prepares students for their success in the future. The Richland School District ensures that all students are provided quality education and that each one makes progress academically. Extracurricular activities are also important in a child’s total development. The Richland community is a team which supports education and helps students to be the best that they can ever be.
