Pasco School District Resources & Statistics:

The school is named after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, an American poet of the 1800’s, who wrote poems like Paul Revere’s Ride, Evangeline, A Psalm of Life, The Song of Hiawatha, and Christmas Bells.  He was also an educator and a linguist.  Among the honors he received were honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Queen Victoria’s and the Prince of Wales’ invitation and the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Spanish Academy chose him as a member.

Among the school's events are the Back to School Picnic, We Care Sports, Family Math Night, and Family Reading Night. The school encourages parents to join in their children’s activities as parent involvement plays a big part in every student’s success.

The school also has the Make Your Day Citizenship Program wherein the teachers are allowed to teach and students are allowed to learn.  In this program students do what is expected from them to the best of their ability.  This program teaches students that their learning behavior when they leave school until the following morning is their responsibility.  It also motivates students in a positive way because of the feeling that they can succeed and they can be the best in whatever they choose to do.

The curriculum of Longfellow Elementary School is in line with the Essential Academic Learning Requirements or EALR.  The EALR was created in 1933 by the Washington State Commission on Student Learning.  EALR outlines expectations for each student’s accomplishment in the core subject areas of Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Science, Arts, Communication, Health and Fitness, and Social Studies.

Longfellow Elementary School’s mission is to provide students a secure learning environment, to teach using the best practices, and to encourage parent involvement to prepare them to become competent academically, respectful, good and contributing citizens of society.

There are several goals for school improvement.  One goal is that every year until 2008, an increase by ten percent of the students meeting the WASL standards in the reading and mathematics portion. Another goal is a ten percent increase in parent involvement every year until 2008.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Elementary School, the home of the Longhorns, prioritizes the students and prepares them to become life-long learners.
