Origin

Southgate Elementary School was founded in 1978 and has a total of 12 acres of land.  It has a library media center, a gymnasium, a music room and conference rooms.  The concern of the school is not only aimed at academics but the total development of a child.  Parents are encouraged to spend at least 15 minutes everyday with their children discussing their day at school and helping with their homework. The school believes that parents should work hand in hand with the teachers to be able to develop the child academically, physically, and socially.  Part of the Kennewick School District curriculum includes Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Technology.

The Student’s Role

The Southgate Elementary School Student Responsibility Plan is created to offer an environment where students learn and teachers teach.  The student’s role in this plan is to follow the teacher’s rule and to be respectful to others.  The staff’s role is to be involved with the students, setting expectations, and teach school and classroom rules.  Aside from self-discipline, students are also taught responsibility, cooperation, and problem solving skills.  A positive behavior is encouraged and a negative behavior is not tolerated.

Accountability

The Southgate Elementary School issues report cards three times a year and conferences between the parents and teachers are held twice a year.  This is to ensure that parents are aware of their child’s progress in school.  Southgate Elementary School is constantly on top in the Kennewick School District’s academic achievement.  Excellence is the school’s foremost goal.  They want the students to leave the school ready to face the challenging world ahead of them.
